Bill Fontana’s sound installation “Sonic Projections from Schlossberg” for steirischer herbst 1988 was misconstrued as a provocation. More than thirty years later, the prominent sound artist is returning to create a spectacular artistic experience with new themes and innovative technology. As in 1988, he will be sending out sounds from the clock tower to eight different locations around the city centre. The project is intended to reappraise history and explores the technical possibilities of perceiving sound among hearing and non-hearing people. The aim is for soothing sounds to boost the resilience of local residents.

The re-enactment of the “Sonic Projections” follows on from Bill Fontana’s exhibition “Primal Energies” that is on show at the Kunsthaus from 12/3 until 14/6/2020. Acoustic guided tours of the city embark on new avenues of art education by and with people with a disability. In cooperation with ORF radio, Fontana’s sounds can also be heard beyond the boundaries of the city.
